Unboxing of the Barbara John's Model

In December 2025, a statue of Barbara Rose Johns was erected in the United States Capitol to represent Virginia. Each state may place two statues in National Statuary Hall. Johns joins George Washington, who has been one of the Commonwealth’s representatives since 1934.

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) has acquired the maquette that artist Steven Weitzman presented to Virginia’s Commission for Historical Statues in the United States Capitol (Commission) for approval of the statue design. This artifact is the only surviving version of the artwork except the final, full-size statue itself.

Starting February 27, the model will be on view at the VMHC. Presented in partnership with Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources, this display allows Virginians to see this monumental work that has shaped Virginia history and to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Moton School walkout, led by Johns, on April 23.
